I skipped the math and just ran a real world test, i.e. I had Steam complete a backup of the game with DVD as the selected file size.

Yeah, that is what mine says.

Looking at the GOG version, the website shows 5.4 GB total, and a bit of research shows that the setup files come in 4.1GB and 1.5GB, although I do not have this version so I may be wrong (someone correct me!) So it seems that both versions *should* fit on 2 DVDS.

Yeah, Steam's downloads are uncompressed, so the file sizes are huge compared to an installer package like GOG gives you. Heck, a DL DVD should hold the whole thing.

Honestly, it's most likely that the DVD will just allow you to download it from Steam like the Skyrim disk did... but 3 DVDs would fit with Cyan tradition, or even a Blu-Ray. They've never been afraid of cutting edge mass storage.

I figured it would be more like a bypass for downloading it, more akin to the Fallout discs. You would still need Steam to install and update it, but the initial download files would be on the disk.

Are there really no files on the Skyrim disc?

I don't remember if there are, but I know that when I put the disk in it just added the game to my library and downloaded it normally. I don't have the disk anymore.

That is almost as bad as buying the boxed copy of Wasteland II and instead of getting any disc, they just threw a redemption code into the box and called it good. At that point, why even release a boxed copy? I love boxed copies more than the next guy, but that just seemed a bit...dumb.

Seriously? Isn't that false advertising?

I would think so. Especially for a full game.

I know during the Sims 3 era (and maybe now) EA did the same thing with their expansion packs as well.

They also did it with their "Stuff Packs" which, while it kind of makes sense because they were not adding a lot of content, but why even make a box for it at all? It was basically a slightly larger microtransaction for them and added up to a very small DLC package.

I do hate to bump an old thread, but I did just find something interesting that I thought would be appropriate for some of the people here like me who missed the kickstarter but want a boxed copy. (And if it is not allowed, please remove this post!) But there was/is a boxed release that has showed up on a few auction sites (eBay).

Double layer DVDs cost more but say they will hold 8.5gb which is actually around 8.2 or 8.3. Will work in any DVD player/burner, not sure about ancient one though.

Any new computer that can play Obduction can use double-layer disks. That is if it has a DVD-ROM drive at all. They have been around since Myst IV. At that time it was a concern but that was years ago.
