Obduction -- Time to buy newer computers?

Postby Jamie Marchant » Thu Nov 21, 2013 1:16 pm

If you backed Obduction and bought it or will be buying it latter on you should be aware that the 2010 MOULa was originally written to run on 2007 hardware(with parts probably coded for the 2003 hardware of URU). While Unreal Engine 4 which Obduction will use just came out recently and with computer years being faster then dog years you may have to upgrade your computer or buy a new one. The fact that some people are trying to run to MOUL(Gehn) on a computer that does not support SSE3(2004)? or SSE4(2006) really shows the age of the hardware some people are trying to use.

Annways I just thought I would point that out incase it never crossed your mind.

In two years I should be itching to buy a new computer anyway. :)

I bought a new one in preparation for Gametap Uru Live and I was glad I did as later I found the old one could not handle crowds.

I know it will be more that a year, maybe two in the future, but I'm looking forward to finding out the minimum and recommended specs.

Yes, the knowledge that a lot of MOULa players still use fairly old hardware had me thinking about posing that very question about expected system requirements during the Kickstarter campaign. But like many things, I'd forget all about it by the time I actually got to the point of making any posts  .

I am not too familiar with Unreal Engine 4 but the previous version 3 ran on my laptop fine which has a relatively slow GPU from 2 years ago.

The performance of the game will depend on what settings Cyan allow us to turn on or off. Also if you want the 'full' experience you will need a recent and fast GPU.

Since Cyan seem to use Macs for a lot of stuff I would use the specifications of recent Macs as guide to the sort of system specs you would want if you are going to buy/build a new computer (but ignore the Macs that only have Intel graphics, you really want AMD/NVIDIA GPUs)

I would look for a GPU that supports DirectX 11+ or OpenGL 4+ with a quad-core Intel Core i5/i7 (or AMD FX) CPU.

I too was thinking of asking about estimated System Requirements but then thought that Cyan themselves may not know the answer with the game being in conceptual phases. I can't seem to find the system requirements for UE4 on-line anywhere, so I assume they very form product to product.

If I where a moderator I would make a comment about getting off-topic but alas I don have that authority. ;)

EDIT: Adding a wink.

No need to be frustrated. See the little white triangle with the red exclamation mark on each post? ;)

My computers are more than ready to handle this game. Especially next year when I upgrade from a 2GB GPU (graphics card) to a 4GB one. I already have some good processors and a decent amount of RAM so... I'm ready.

You could always gohttp://www.unrealengine.com/en/features/ it has lots of info on unreal engine, plus you can download the UDK if you want. There is also lots of video about it out there. Like this one http://youtu.be/acR4n6lJEdQ
