Something Myst-like this way comes

Postby phvolt220 » Fri Sep 13, 2013 4:53 pm

Revival of the Myst Online thread... :)

The games we've talked about so far are:

    The Five Cores
    Kairo
    Xing: The Land Beyond
    The Gallery: Six Elements
    Ages of Ilathid ???

Did I myst --erm-- miss any? I forgot whether or not there was a little snippet mentioning "The Room"... :?:
________________________________________________________

Now for my regular post, The Gallery: Six Elements hasn't been getting much discussion lately, so I'd like to start. :)

Cloudhead Games, the people developing the game The Gallery: Six Elements, recently released some footage of one of their worlds in the game, the Air World. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zwpj63pvXR0
An Air World teaser can be downloaded from the Oculus VR Share site. Even though it's on the Oculus site, the demo is still mouse/keyboard and gamepad compliant. https://share.oculusvr.com/app/1376925807566pn4q60qkt9

The lead developer mentioned in the Kickstarter video that the game is Myst-influenced. Basically you're an urban explorer who travels through six worlds through different paintings (instead of books ) on a mission to gather six keys. I think you get trapped in the gallery and have to find the six keys in order to get out; I'm not absolutely sure. The six words are Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Love, and Death.

As far as Xing: The Land Beyond goes, according to their dev blog the release has been pushed back from October 2013 to early/mid 2014 due to "underestimation." http://xingthegame.blogspot.com

Yeah, Jonathan Blow's 'The Witness' is undeniably Myst-like. One of the 3d artists on the Witness, Eric A. Anderson, has actually worked for Cyan Worlds, and apparently will again for 'Obduction'.

I might also mention 'Dear Esther' as being Myst-like in the sense of visually beautiful and atmospheric first-person exploration (but it is more a visual novel than a game - it has no puzzles).

'The Room' is a good example of mobile adventure gaming, and there's been a sequel released just recently.

Other upcoming adventure games that may appeal to some portions of the Myst fanbase include crowdfunded titles 'Dreamfall Chapters" (the third and final portion of the Longest Journey series) "Armikrog" (a quirky stop-motion-animated adventure game by the creators of the Neverhood), and "Asylum" (a large horror themed adventure game by the creator of 'Scratches'.)

I'll throw a couple of my in-progress projects onto the list just because the Myst resemblance is obvious aesthetically ('Isola', a puzzle/adventure game with an island setting, and 'Panoramic Worlds', a collection of explorable fantasy environments), but they're not of the same technical or artistic caliber as most of the others we're listing here. There are limits to what an individual like me can realistically accomplish, especially when my time is split between about a dozen different projects.

I've heard Gone Home cited as a Myst-like, in that it's an atmospheric mystery/adventure game where you go around an empty house discovering what happened via contextual clues. I think that's closer to the spirit of Myst than anything else.

ASA: A Space Adventure
I thought it was very well made, especially for a one-man project (two-man to be precise, Simon Mesnard did everything apart from the soundtrack, which was composed by Stélian Derenne). If anybody out there has a hunger for "Myst in space (but not solely)", I highly recommend giving this one a try.
The author has recently announced a follow-up, not directly connected but in the same "universe" called Catyph: The Kunci Experiment.

Extrasolar ( http://www.exoresearch.com/ , http://www.whatisextrasolar.com/ ) is a wacky exploration game where you control a rover on an alien planet, searching for life. It's pretty, and it's got some (mild) ARG-like elements too.

It's currently in beta. But I lucked into a beta-testing slot, and now I have one (1) invite to offer. Anybody interested? PM me an email address to send it to.

EDIT: It's been snagged. :)

No-one has posted about Xing for a while - but they continue to publish devblogs and kickstarter updates. I felt I had to post because they have just uploaded a vid of reactions to their demos at GDC, and one of the people commenting says it has a Myst-like feel; so my post is bang on topic! (Which admittedly isn't always the case   )

Chuck Carter (one of the people who worked on original Myst) is working on a project called Curio with Eagre Games. It will be a first person exploration/adventure game and will use the Unreal 4 engine. The plot features a girl who creates mental fantasy worlds and eventually becomes trapped there. I'm not clear on whether it will be very puzzle-focused, the way Cyan's games are, or will be more of an interactive narrative like Dear Esther. Here is the web site: http://www.eagregames.com/

FRACT just came out: http://fractgame.com/

I was very pleased with it. The world is abstract and music-based. No story element, but the puzzles are pretty good and exploring the space is a great experience.

Because the developers would have to port it over to Apple's system, which is neither easy, nor cheap. Some of these games are even free.
Besides I don't think the mobile market is necessarily the best place for games like this.
