Myst/Uru deja vu's in Obduction?

Wow! Just finished Obduction and what an amazing journey it was. Cyan really delivered a masterpiece!

On multiple occassions, especially in the beginning!, I was reminded of experiences in Myst and Uru. I wrote them down while playing and I thought it would be nice to share. Did you have the same 'flashbacks'? Perhaps I missed some references.

  • The music at the start of the game (picnic area) reminded me of the music for Laki'ahn
  • Impossible to miss: the mayor greeting newcomers with "Shorah"!
  • C.W.: "Who the devil are you?" like Atrus in Myst
  • Cones 8-)
  • The first time I walked on top of metal plates (on one of the houses in Hunrath Downtown) I got flashbacks from walking around in Teledahn in URU. Same sound effects?
  • The "fuel drain" control on the locomotive in Hunrath was similar to the switches in Channelwood in Myst.
  • A windmill in Hunrath... Myst had a windmill in Channelwood and Uru had one in the Cleft.
  • The rotating staircase sphere from Kaptar that was in Hunrath reminded me of the tower rotation puzzle in Myst.
  • Did you also close all the doors behind you to check if there was a hidden passage? At least it worked in Farley's Vault!

the rotating sphere is also reminiscent of the rotating building on Temple Island in Riven!

and I found most of Maray to be reminiscent of Ahnonay!!

I noticed the following common sound effects:
1. Kaptar rotating platform (near first ambassador seed machine): Same sound effect as rotating pentagonal beetle room near the beginning of Riven/Temple Island.
2. C.W.'s construction noises inside his vault in Hunrath: Same sound effects (partial) as DRC construction noises in MOULa/Ae'gura (the DRC are noisier than C.W.).
3. Metal ramps: Same sound effects as metal ramps in MOULa (Teledahn, etc.).
4. Hunrath's windmill: Same sound effect as MOULa Cleft's windmill.

And yes; I noticed "Shorah," "Moula Cola" and the cones, too. :D

Walk slowly through the blue beam on your way to CW, and it sounds like linking in Uru. The angle and speed you cross that blue line can make for fun variations in the sound.

In fact, all the footsteps sound effects are exactly like URU which is nice because I feel at home ;)

You know that ad in the garage with the 1-555-CALLYOU? If you turn it around, you'll see a vintage ad for "The Manhole"

One of backers' item is a Myst book with the "complete mechanism" seenable (the one Cyan & Atrus never told us about...) :lol:

Obviously Moula Cola, I've seen it too.

The levers, the metallic grates,remind me of URU and Myst Games

I'm afraid that I Moula Cola doesn't ring a bell for me. Did Zandi have Moula Cola or was it somewhere else?

I missed a few things in my list:
- Of course, "imagers", even being called exactly the same
- When C.W. tells you to get under the tree, I had to think of Zandi: "And then... enter the tree" :lol:

Did you also press the space bar to jump on rocks, just like in URU, and then made a picture instead? :mrgreen:

Erik, "Moula" (or MOULa) is the anagram for "Myst Online URU again."

Edited to correct to "Myst Online URU Live again." (Doh! Thanks, Tahgtahv!)

You missed "Live" in there. I gotta admit I missed most of these references myself, and had to go look after I read about them. I tried searching for that advertisement for Manhole, but it seems like it was made up for the game. All the info in it is correct though, aside from the name of the magzine/newspaper the page was from. Incidently, there is a site called Global Adventurist(s), obviously unrelated.

Yes it looks like made up for the game indeed. It's a nice vintage ad though. As if the game "The Manhole" had been made circa 1920-1930 ;)

I see the mention of the computerized Myst book, but no mention of the book sitting RIGHT next to it? I think I heard it was a copy of the Myst RPG book... also a backer item.

Are the butterflies by the river the same as the ones you can carry back to your Relto in MOUL? To me the creatures in Kaptar that look very much like the 'quabs' from Ahnonay[sp?] in MOUL. They seem to now be sometimes-glowing flyers rather than scuttling about fearfully on a fake island but to me the resemblance is uncanny. Or am I just imagining these?
