What will make MME 10th Anv. Ed. run in Mountain Lion???

I got a copy of Myst ME awhile ago, and obviously didn't think to look closely at WHAT mac products are supported. I was really stoked to find the games, as I haven't seen them since I was a teenager, but (of course, silly me) I can't get them to run :( I have browsed through various forums and keep seeing all these different programs, like Bootcamp, Wine, Playonmac (I did try this one and couldn't get it to work...), Sheepshaver(?), etc. I just don't know which I should even be trying? I don't have much money to spend and I can't afford to screw up my computer installing a program I know nothing about. Can ANYONE help me out? I would love to be able to play a little Myst and unwind at the end of the day, instead of get frustrated trying to figure out HOW?
Thoughts?
Thank you :)

Hi delia,

I never managed to get MME to work via Wineskin but didn't try all that hard either since I *did* get realMyst to work. :)

If you're willing to be patient, I can see about re-testing more thoroughly and let you know the results... I'm on Mavericks but if I can get the wrapper to work there, it will probably work for you too on Mountain Lion. ;)

You could try to run it with ScummVM (though last time I’ve tried it it was a bit buggy). I’ll try to run it with Wineskin too.

As a sidenote, you mentioned Sheepshaver: that is a Mac PPC emulator, it would work if you had the original Mac edition of Myst (and an install disk for MacOS ≤ 9) ;)

UPDATE:

It is ALMOST working with PlayOnMac~ after leaving it a few days and doing some deep breathing ;) It will open, and 90% of the time there is sound. However, graphics are little to none. Once, it opened and revealed 'The Book', but every other time it is either an all black screen, or I get a few glitchy flashes of picture before a black screen. I've discovered that when I open a drop down menu, then exit it, there is picture where the menu was. Likewise, if I open a window (preferences or something), then move it around the screen + exit, I can make all the picture appear. Also, there is no visible cursor within the game screen, only along the sides or on the top bar.
Once, I just guessed roughly where the cursor should be and made a wild click on the picture in the book to see if anything would happen... The sound did change to the sounds of the dock, and one teeny tiny bar of the right graphics appeared in a corner.
Aaaaand now I'm stuck again.

Korov'ev, I am using a disk for Myst, but I wouldn't even know where to look to get a disk for OS (seems like that way will probably be a major pain)... I'm going to look up ScummVM right now!

In the meantime, anyone know what I may be able to do to fix the graphics in PlayOnMac?

For ScummVM, here is how to add a game (you’ll need the development build, not the stable one), and here is the list of the files you’ll need :)
The game is launched from the ScummVM Launcher; saving and loading is done with ctrl-F5, and you can skip videos with escape.

Pardon my utter ignorance... But, do you mean I should ONLY copy the files on the list you gave me from the Myst disk to a new folder? And I am not entirely sure what to do with the 'development' link? I assume I'm supposed to download the link that pertains to my computer, but then what?
This does look promising though :)

I tried just copying ALL the files from the Myst disk into a new folder, then tried to 'add game' with ScummVM. When click 'ad game' I get my usual Mac file browser, not what it says I should get in the ScummVM user manual.
IN the Myst folder, there is no option to choose the .DAT files on the list. All of those files are faded.
Just for the fiery abyss of it, I tried just 'choosing' the Myst folder anyway, and it showed up in the ScummVM windo, but of course when I tried to open it I got 'game not found'.

You do need to select the folder, not its content. Perhaps you could try with the PlayOnMac folder. Be sure to use the development build, not the stable one (which doesn’t have support for the Mohawk engine yet).

Where did you get Myst ME from? I have the Steam version, and haven’t yet been able to launch it with Wineskin (it needs a full Steam install, but it stucks on updating).

I got the 10th Anniversary Myst trilogy 2nd hand, box disk set. I tried selecting the folder, and same thing 'game not found'. The Scumm user manual made it look like I should get a Scumm browser to choose the file from... Do you get that or your computers usual bowser window?

Maybe I didn't do something right with the 'development' link you gave me? I clicked on the download for Mac OS x, and it did download, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to do anything else with it?....

I get the standard browser too, it’s just the OS overriding Scumm’s interface.
The files in the list are the essential ones, but you could pick a complete install.
The development build is just the app, it shouldn’t need anything in particular.

I just gave the Launcher the location of the Myst folder; I get a warning about it being a development version when I launch it, but that’s it.
In the Graphics tab of Game Settings I have Fullscreen unchecked and HQ2x set as Graphics mode, but I don’t think this is the issue.

Sorry, I can’t think of a solution at the moment. Does the alert says anything else?
You could try to use the Terminal, to get more details (you can just drag the app to the Terminal window to get the path):
Code: Select all
cd /path/to/ScummVM.app/Content/MacOS (press enter)
./scummvm -d 3 (press enter)

Sorry for the late reply...

I also get 'WARNING: The game you are about to start is not yet fully supported by ScummVM. As such, it is lekely to be unstable, and any saves you make might not work in future versions of ScummVM.' There is a 'Start Anyway' or 'Cancel' button. When I start anyway, I get 'Error running game: Game data not found.'

Also, icon for the 'development' download just looks like a page. Is that right? If I try to drag it to the ScummVM window, it doesn't get accepted.... :(

Ugh. Well I found a super old PC to borrow, hoping it would work... But it seems it will read any disk BUT Myst :( Then I found a newer PC to borrow (running Win7) and was SO STOKED it WORKED!!!.... Until I tried the levers in the clock tower. Total crash. Every time.

Old computers are a great way of running older games :). Sadly Apple has changed the core software and hardware of the Mac so much that older progrmas don't run on newer machines, so Windows is a good choose. Doss will run on a newer machine since the PC 'core' has not changed since the 80s when the first PC ws mad.

As for your problem do you have the correct version of quicktime?

As far as trying with this PC... I have the Quicktime version that comes with the disk, so it should be right? It is sooo glitchy! After putting in the code on the safe in the cabin, I can move the handle, but not open it, can't turn the red wheel, and every time I try the levers in the clock tower the game freezes.
