Tutorial: Run Exile on Linux

Postby cloudrac3r » Thu Aug 18, 2016 7:03 pm

Here, I will show you how to install Myst III: Exile on Linux. I will be using Ubuntu 14.04.
The general guide is as follows:
1. Copy the files from the 4 CDs to the hard disk
2. Install ResidualVM
3. Run Exile

Detailed guide: copying files
1. Create a folder in an easily accessible location; eg the desktop. Name it myst3.
2. Insert Exile CD 1.
3. Copy M3.exe from the root of the CD to the myst3 folder.
4. Copy the Data folder from the root of the CD to the myst3 folder.
5. Copy the M3Data folder from the root of the CD to the myst 3 folder.
6. Eject CD 1
7. Follow instructions 8-10 3 times:
8. Insert the next CD.
9. Copy the Data folder from the root of the CD to the myst3 folder. If prompted, choose the option to merge the folders. If you get another prompt about overwriting the file id.m3i, choose Yes/Overwrite.
10. Eject the CD.

Installing ResidualVM:
1. Go to http://www.residualvm.org/downloads/
2. If a package is shown for your operating system and you know how to install it, do that. Otherwise, read the instructions in blue to find out how to compile it from source.
3. Install the following packages: gcc, git, libsdl1.2-dev. If you're lucky, you should just be able to run sudo apt-get install gcc git libsdl1.2-dev. Otherwise, you'll have to install them manually.
4. Run the following commands:
Code: Select all
git clone git://github.com/residualvm/residualvm.git
cd residualvm
mkdir build
cd build
../configure && make

If it succeeds, you can then run sudo make install if you like. If it doesn't succeed, tell me what the error is and I'll do my best to help.

Running Exile:
1. Run the command residualvm. After a moment, a mostly black window should appear.
2. Choose "Add Game..."
3. Enter the Desktop/myst3 folder and then click OK.
4. Push the Start button. Exile should run. In the residualvm windows, you can also choose options for full screen/windowed mode, volume, and so on.

If Exile is copy protected or encrypted or something, and ResidualVM complains:
1. Go to this website: http://wiki.residualvm.org/index.php/Myst_3
2. Under "Updates for the CD version" select the latest version for your language. I used the English version. Save the file somewhere but DO NOT run it.
3. Go to this website: http://constexpr.org/innoextract/#download
4. Download the version for your distribution, or follow these instructions in orange to compile from source:

C1. Unzip the innoextract source code folder.
C2. Open a terminal
C3. Change to the innoextract folder.
C4. Run these commands:
Code: Select all
mkdir build
cd build
cmake .. && make

If you run into a problem, tell me about it. I'll do my best to help.

5. Run this command from the build folder: ./innoextract -e -I app/bin/M3.exe /path/to/myst-patch.exe
6. Then run: mv app/bin/M3.exe .
7. You will now have a M3.exe file in the build folder. Take it, and copy it over M3.exe in the myst3 folder.
8. Open ResidualVM, remove Exile, (don't worry, this won't delete any files, it'll only remove it from the list), and then add Exile again using the Add Game button.
9. Press the Start button and enjoy playing Exile on your Linux system!

If you encounter any errors, please don't hesitate to tell me about them. Upload the terminal output to somewhere and post a link to it so I can see.

Very nice, thank you cloudrac3r.

Maybe we can get this stickied by the mods?

Apparently a similar tool named ScummVM supports playing realMyst: Remasted on Linux too - but since I don't own that game I don't have the chance to try it. And I don't wish to buy the game and then find I can't play it.
I was able to do this for Exile since I already bought it during my Windows days.
If anyone else owns rM:RM, maybe they could try it?

Both Myst ME and Riven work fine with ScummVM. Not realMyst, though.
