Myst 5 Stack Dump on Win7 64bit

Postby A'lan » Mon Dec 23, 2013 1:46 pm

I recently re-installed Myst 5 on a newly built Win7 64 bit machine and when I try to launch the game I get a stack dump. I have tried the compatibility modes etc. but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Greetings A'lan,

I haven't encountered this problem myself, but you might check this article and see if it helps. Post back here with the results so others can benefit!

BTW, I am assuming this solution is for installing from the original CD/DVD. Chances are excellent that the downloadable gog.com version will work properly, so if you can't get yours to work right, you might consider getting the gog.com one. Even better, it's on sale there (1/2 off) through the end of the month/year.

You need to get this patch here:
http://cho.cyan.com/patches/Myst5InitFiles.zip
It appears to be the same patch that is on the Jctrl article but from a more reliable source(Cyan's own server).

The patch worked perfectly. I used the one from the Cyan server. One thing to note is that it no longer knows my progress. I will restore my progress.db file from my other computer and see. It is not really a big deal as the whole point to re-installing was so I could go on the journey again.

I recently tried to use the link above, but it (from here) takes me to an irrelevant web page, and from the Myst Technical Help forum takes me to the page with the correct URL showing, but the page is blank. Also no download.

It happens that I have a copy of the zipped file as originally provided by Cyan (the ".exe" file is in French but works fine). I have just tried to send a copy of that file to Vicki Almond at Cyan Worlds, but the mail server gave me a permanent failure because the zip file contains the executable, and "THEY" don't permit those. So I have (once again) been stymied (by "THEM") in my effort to get this file "out there" for people who need it! I also cannot attach the file to a post in the Myst forum, because "THEY" (in this case a different "THEY") don't allow it. So if anyone needs this file, send me a PM on the UbiSoft Myst V tech forum (I'm "wstrohm") and I will gladly send a copy vie e-mail. The file is only 484 Kbytes.

Jamie Marchant,

That link is now working for me; thanks for letting me know! BTW, I am on a "Hackintosh," and my browser is Safari version 7.0.5. What is now happening is: when I click your link, there is no change in the web page, i.e. it remains here. But now my Downloads folder has in it the correct folder.

So all is now well. I will check the Myst V Technical forum and see if their link is now working also.

Thanks again for your response.
