Myst IV in an Alternate Universe...

General discussion about Myst IV: Revelation.

Myst IV in an Alternate Universe...

Postby Rivenian » Sat Feb 01, 2014 1:22 am

Y'a know what always bugged me? The little details about Revelation that seemed to drag down an otherwise rich and engaging Myst game. Of note: the acting, how Serenia was handled, the lack of a cool title, and trademark Myst subtlety. Subtlety is the key here. It's what made Myst's I to III so evocative and why in part Revelation feels so clunky. Serenia as a whole is a good example.

Enter Earth 102: An age where Myst IV was handled with as much subtlety and polish as Riven, an age where Myst IV had a cool evocative title and a cool sleek look...

...I give you Revelation 2.0:

Remember that Ubisoft did Revelation, not Cyan or Presto Studios.

Yup, knew that. That's kinda why I tried the redesign. I hate the original Ubi box art so much. Wanted to inject the mystery back into the game.

I would pay to see this become reality.

The things I would do to see this happen...

You're right on the mark. That game could've been so much better. I still liked it, but it didn't have the Myst feel...

I love the box redesigns! Thanks for sharing them with us.

I was expecting to hate Myst 3 and 4 based on the reviews I had read from people who liked Myst. I bought and played them anyway and I enjoyed them much more than I expected. I am happier that they exist than if they did not.

Myst III in retrospect is a terrific game with great art design. A lot better than many games today. As for Myst IV its about half good. Haven and Spire are fabulous along with Tomahna but serenia and dream are just yerk. Serenia is quite beautiful but tremendously cliched and Dream reminds of a phone app. The puzzles throughout range from smart to extremely obtuse and/or frustrating due to being timed based (spider chair, mangree puzzle).

Also I think they took the rubix cube concept a little too far as it seems to make up 90 % of the puzzle mechanics. The good stuff is the lushness of everything, the detail, the narrated books and the ALIVe engine. The acting is also really terrible. Rand is surprisingly a good actor considering he's just some CEO. Sirrus and Achenar and the Serenians made me laugh every time they spoke, which in a Myst game is not good.

Five ages? In your version would there be another age or would Dream be handled and considered an Age?

I've thought of including Tay for a visit to Catherine. I've always wanted to explore the inside of that hive. Dream is more like a non-corporeal tangent of explorable realities... sort of like the Nexus in Star Trek Generations. I thought it would be cool if you're spirit guide could take the form of three previous characters from Myst lore:

Water - Ti'Ana
Air - Veovis
Fire - A'Gaeris

Hi Rivenian,

Just curious about your choices for the spirit guide characters, since I've always considered them benevolent. Veovis? A'Gaeris? I'm sure you have your reasons and I'd like to know more. :)

Well as for fire, there's an implication that the player himself isn't necessarily benevolent. It was either A'Gaeris or Gehn, but I wanted a character that embodied fire, or the dark side of Myst, that would provide a kind of shock to the player. I think it would be cool if the player is a bit scared from these character's appearances, and they would serve to reveal more of the Myst backstory as well as aide the player.

Veovis I believe was ultimately redeemed in the end. It's been a while since I read BoT. I think having a redeemed Veovis who could shed some light on the events of the fall would provide the player with a lot of meaty backstory and serve to neatly tie together BoT and the Myst era. I don't think Veovis was ever really bad, just fooled into his own demise. As the Mysteriacs said, he's the tragic protagonist like in ancient Greek tragedy. He's the Anakin of Myst.
