Myst V: End of Ages 8th Anniversary

Today marks the 8th anniversary of the release of the grand finale, Myst V: End of Ages. And while it isn't nearly as significant as Myst's 20th, it is still something to be acknowledged.

So in honor of it, I pose two questions:

What was your favorite thing about Myst V?
What did you least like about Myst V?

I liked the camera movement and the ability to look all around.

What I liked most, and for some reason this doesn't get a lot of credit, is the Aesthetic design of the game. For any given age, it has a certain artistic beauty that many other locations in the Myst series just kind of lacked. I guess the best way to describe it would be "evocative".

And I think that a lot of people would agree that the tablet system, while a pretty neat idea, got kind of repetitive and was sometimes devilishly frustrating. It would've worked better on a tablet.

I never really played Myst V (only borrowed it from a friend and watched an LP), but I can imagine that writing with the mouse is hard. I've messed around with Windows's handwriting system just for fun at some point, and that was not easy, and I'd imagine the game being similar to that.

The Great Shaft is really nice in my opinion, although quite linear. It would be really nice to have it in Uru, with the Nexus pedestals working and a few more doors open. But that probably won't happen anytime soon...

I liked it a lot, though I was expecting more at the time, but I don't know what. I guess my favorite part was getting to visit the Great Shaft, but my least favorite part was Esher. As a character he was fine, but eventually it got so you were praying for ways to avoid him, and there are none.

Actually, in Laki'ahn, you can circle around the entire building through the arena if you already know the door combination. Then you can open the door he's standing in front of and see him waiting there. It's pretty fun to replay the entire game looking for ways to sneak up on Esher by linking with the tablet, because there are several places where you can get behind him. The stairs to his lab in Noloben are another one.

I think my favorite thing in Myst V was Todelmer. The one thing the Myst saga was missing was a good space-focused Age, and boom, there it is. I love how it saves its best surprise for the end, when you've solved everything.

I actually enjoyed having Esher pop up on a regular basis, though it does give Myst V a rather different feel when compared to the solitude of the earlier games. Which leads me into my least favorite thing:

I got kind of attached to Esher, on account of his being my constant companion throughout the game. I noted the early signs of various negative attitudes on his part, but forgave them. Then he turned out to be a real creep, and there's no possibility of redeeming him. I guess it's not ALL that different from what happened with Sirrus and Achenar, but it felt like more of a mean bait-and-switch this time around.

I actually found Myst V to be the least evocative of all the Myst games, save for Todelmer. I guess a lot of it has to do with the art style and the lack of clutter. What I loved the most about the other games was the sheer amount of stuff you could play around with and examine - especially in Myst IV. These things made the world feel lush and intricate. The ages in Myst V felt rather barren and linear. However the art style is what gets me, as I feel it was better suited to Uru with its infinite amount of Ages concept. Myst games normally have very 'compressed' age design - this means cramming as much iconic imagery and level design into a small area, whether it's the ship and lighthouse in Stoneship, the ship and jungle in Haven, the tree in Edanna or the floating spire of Spire. It has to be poetic from a design standpoint, and I felt Myst V's ages, although well designed, didn't have that element of character that the other games perfected.

Myst V is probably my least favorite Myst game, but it's still my most frequently played. This is due to the awesomeness of free-roam and the ability to mod the in-game music. :)

Maybe not anytime soon, but I believe it's almost in beta ;)

My favorite part of Myst V was that there IS a Myst V! There was a very good chance that after the fall of Uru that there wouldn't even be a Cyan, much less another game!

My least favorite part was the rushed, recycled feeling that I got. And that's precisely because is WAS rushed and recycled. I personally think that those two issues account for 99% of the game's issues.
