(Yes, I'm kidding about that last bit. But this is the first post on Firmament on this forum, so I can if I want to.)

For now and AFAIK, nobody at Cyan claimed that Firmament will be VR-only.
The demo is VR-exclusive but it's just a demo, not the final product.
Wait and see… ;)

The VR only comment was one I found on a Facebook post which I can no longer find. They have repeatedly said on FB that no platforms have been announced, etc. Someone has been doing some serious regrouping on Facebook...and the more I think about it, the less convinced I am that VR only would be wise. I mean, look at the base we provide them. Many of us around since Manhole! And a number of us not yet ready to jump to VR for any one of a number of reasons.

I sure hope we don't have to wait as long for this as we did for Obduction!

If there was a non-VR version I would definitely back this as soon as I could ... if it's VR only, not sure if or when I could back it.

I doubt that it will be VR only, especially if Cyan is looking for a publisher to fund the game. It's just not that big a market quite yet.
However, I could see it as being developed as a VR game that has a regular version, as opposed to Obduction, which was a regular game that they made a VR version of. It's a subtle difference, but I'm certain that there are design considerations that need to be made to ensure the best VR experience that don't exactly match with what you would do with a regular game.

At least I hope that's the case.

Ryan Warzecha himself stated that no platform has been decided yet (which means that no platform has been excluded)
For now, it's urgent to wait… ;)

VR-only would be surprising, and risky.
That's not to say it can't work. (it worked well enough for the very Myst-like game "The Gallery: call of the star seed"). But that's uselessly risky, for the most part what can work in VR can work on regular setup. Unless they plan to have some very specific gameplay that require a VR controller input (like the Rift Touch of the Vive Wands). The video doesn't really show any kind of gameplay so it's hard to say.

It's a bit of a two edged sword. On one hand it might help them get some funding because VR is quite trendy. But on the other hand it'll definitely decrease the potential audience.

Thanks for the Spokesman article link. That's information I didn't have yesterday.

It sounds like the whole thing is very up-in-the-air.

I'll be at GDC, so I'll have a chance to try their demo.

Yeah, as soon as I read the article stating that it was not funded, that became obvious.

It would be silly to announce a platform -- or VR-compatiblity, or VR-exclusivity, or anything else -- before they're done negotiating with whoever might front the cash for the thing.
